Tejas R. Mehta, MD
Board Certified, General Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology
Dr. Mehta is an honors graduate of the University of Florida in Gainesville where he received a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. He then received his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa. After completing his pediatric residency at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Dr. Mehta continued at Emory to complete a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.
Prior to joining Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates, Dr. Mehta was a pediatric gastroenterology attending physician at Arnold Palmer Hospital Center for Pediatric Digestive Health and Nutrition in Orlando, Florida. While there, he also served as clinical instructor at both Florida State University’s College of Medicine and the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine. In addition, he participated in the ImproveCareNow program, a nationwide collaborative of pediatric gastroenterology centers to improve the standard of care and outcomes of children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Board certified in pediatric gastroenterology, Dr. Mehta has presented nationally and locally on several pediatric digestive topics, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), IBD, and probiotics. He has also contributed book chapters on the manifestations and treatment of GERD. He is a member of American Gastroenterological Association, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, and the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN).
Dr. Mehta’s primary areas of clinical interest include IBD, GI issues related to cystic fibrosis, and GI diseases resulting from food allergies, including eosinophilic esophagitis. He is fluent in Gujarati and joined the practice’s Pediatric and Adolescent Division in 2014.

Dr. Patel is an honors graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens where he received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. After receiving his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, he completed his pediatric internship and residency at Westchester Medical Center/Maria Fereri Children’s Hospital in Valhalla, N.Y. Dr. Patel then completed a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill-Cornell Medical Center in New York, N.Y. He is board certified in pediatric gastroenterology.
Prior to joining Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates, Dr. Patel was in private practice in South Carolina for five years and served as clinical assistant professor of pediatrics for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He is a member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. For the fourth consecutive year, he was named to Atlanta magazine's 'Top Doctors' guide in gastroenterology by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd.
Dr. Patel’s primary areas of clinical interest include inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, chronic constipation, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and eosinophilic esophagitis. He is fluent in Gujarati and joined the practice’s Pediatric & Adolescent Division in 2014.

Asiya Shakir, MD
Board Certified, General Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology
Dr. Shakir is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Georgia in Athens where she received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a second bachelor’s degree in religion. During her undergraduate studies, she also worked as lead program assistant and assistant teacher for The Autism Angel Network serving elementary-age autistic children. Dr. Shakir received her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where she earned honors in clinical research. After completing her residency at Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta, she completed a fellowship in gastroenterology with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.
Dr. Shakir has presented both locally and nationally on various digestive topics, including chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and the impact of pharmaceuticals on digestive health. She won two first prize awards for her presentations related to quality improvement in IBD and has authored publications on pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. In addition, she has been published in the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Pediatric Neurosurgery. She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society, and she is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN).
Throughout her education and medical training, Dr. Shakir has been passionate about advocacy and volunteer work for her community. She has volunteered her time supporting after-school programs for at-risk youth in Athens, the Salvation Army Homeless Clinic in Augusta, and the YWCA domestic abuse shelter in Oklahoma City. Most recently, she served on the board of directors for The Homeless Alliance in Oklahoma City.
When not taking care of patients, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. Recently, she was interviewed by The New York Times regarding her experience raising a child with food allergies.
Dr. Shakir joined the practice’s Pediatric and Adolescent Division in 2019.

An Atlanta native, Dr. Weitzner is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology. After receiving his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, he completed his residency at Augusta University where he served as chief resident in the department of pediatrics. He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology with Emory University at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) where his researched the pediatric microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease.
During his medical training, Dr. Weitzner received a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics to co-direct an obesity intervention program for families of overweight or at-risk children. He also actively contributed to the pediatric community by serving as a counselor at Camp Rainbow, a day camp for children affected by cancer or rare blood disorders. Prior to joining Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates, Dr. Weitzner worked at CHOA Scottish Rite and was an assistant professor of pediatrics in the division of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at Emory University.

Although he has a passion for all gastrointestinal disorders, Dr. Weitzner’s primary areas of clinical interest include inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition. He joined the practice’s Pediatric and Adolescent Division in 2018.
